And this was the performance everyone talked about, not Queen. That’s been a rewrite of history the past decade.

Fifteen year-old me sitting crossed-legged on the living room floor in front of our small family tv in Kent (England) watching my favourite band on this historic (and sweltering hot!) July afternoon.... Happy days!!

I remember exactly where I was when this aired live. When Bono dropped the mic, motioned for the fans to move forward and then jumped down I lost it!!! SO AMAZING!!!

Whay was going on. In actual fact, was that in the middle of the song, Bono could see from his perspective what Security could not - that 3 women were in danger of being crushed to death by the crowd. He jumped down to alert Security, and they pulled the women out. He danced with one in order to keep her face hidden from paparazzi while she was crying. The band of course could not see what was going on. They were pissed, because they were unable to play Pride, their latest single, because they took too much time with Bad. They didn't find out what he had done until later.

For me this was THE performance of Live Aid. Much more exciting and unpredictable than the Queen performance.

One of the top 10 live performances of all time. Queen got the hype, but this is easily the best show.

U2’s “rooftop concert” got shutdown, but they got off one song before the cops pulled the plug. “Where The Streets Have No Name” official video shows that amazing scene, filmed in downtown LA.

Had the privilege of seeing U2 on the "Joshua Tree" tour, and it was an amazing scene. At the beginning of "Bullet The Blue Sky" an airliner flew RIGHT OVER JFK Stadium in Philly where the concert was being held, the same venue as the U.S. portion of Live Aid. It was packed, well over 100, 000 people. Bruce Springsteen came out for the encore, and they sang "Stand By Me", insane and very emotional.

I first saw U2 in 1983 at the Palladium in NYC. He jumped off the stage, grabbed a girl, pulled her up on stage, and danced with her. He used to do that all the time! I’ve seen them many times over the years, they are always amazing in concert

What was going on was Bono somehow spotted one person in trouble in that sea of people and was gesturing and pointing to security to help her and get her out of there. The woman said later that she felt that he had saved her life from getting crushed to death. Bono has a way of drawing in all the energy from everyone in the crowd and sending it back out again. He is electric in person.

That was real, honest energy and passion, unique and brilliant at the time, although U2 always involved the audience in a similar way before and later - not in a cheap way.
U2's brilliant concerts: Red Rocks 1983; Paris Joshua Tree 1987; Sydney ZOO TV 1993.
Yes, in the evening the veterans came with their uniform "military show": they had been badmouthing the Live Aid idealists in advance, but needed a comeback in their home country in the mid-80s, so they performed anyway.

U2 gave Queen a run for their money. But no one can really top Queens live aid performance. Bad is my favorite U2 song from my favorite album The Unforgettable Fire. Thanks for this!

Made my day Shawn, thanks. Bono is known for riffing and adding parts of other artists' songs during his live shows. He opened the song referencing "Satellite of Love" by Lou Reed, then towards the end "Ruby Tuesday" and "Sympathy For The Devil" by The Rolling Stones and "Walk On The Wild Side" by Lou Reed. They were supposed to close with their recent hit 'Pride (In The Name of Love)", which is about Martin Luther King, but couldn't because Bono extended his performance and they ran out of time. The heat was brutal that day and they were using hoses to try to cool down the crowd but lots of people were still passing out, especially the ones in the front who were packed like sardines and getting crushed against the barricades. In a later interview the girl that he danced with said that he had saved her life by pointing her out to security, they gave her water and got her temperature down.

Bad is my favourite song, and this is a memorable performance of it. I remember when I first saw it: we'd dragged a mattress onto the living room floor so we could watch Live Aid through the night on our crappy old black and white TV. Every act up until U2 had stayed way up on the stage, far away from the crowd, so Bono making physical contact with the audience was like an electric shock. It was like he was reaching out to everyone watching. It's what he does, bless him. Great reaction, Shawn!

I hope that when you come back to U2 you will check out their songs "One" and "New Year's Day", both are awesome.☮

I highly recommend you do the ZooTv version of Love is Blindness - not because it's a favorite, but because it has one of Edge's rare solos, and you are such a big fan of his sound. Also, lyrics; you said you need to get into their lyrics, and I have to say Bono has some of the *absolute best* lyrics to their songs I have ever come across in music, period. One of dozens of examples: Every artist is a cannibal. Every poet is a thief. All kill their inspiration and sing about the grief.
