You reference these examples like Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary... This is a special zone in Eastern EU, these are new countries to the EU that have recently been allowed in.
Not trying to sound pedantic but this is not the heart of the EU...
People from outside the EU seem not to understand the EU is not a homogenous zone of government power nor the pretence of cultural uniformity.

I mean corruption in Eastern Europe and Southern Europe has always been much higher than the north and west. healthcare is free in most of Europe which wasn’t mentioned. I’m all for criticism of Europe and advanced countries but fantastic insightful journalism this is not. I’d go read the report if you want what it actually says.
