There's actually a "scientific answer" to this debate:

Evolution-wise, we actively went out and tamed dogs. This means that for thousands of years now, dogs have seen personal benefit from understanding us and working with us.
Cats, by contrast, were not actively sought by humans, but instead figured out *themselves* that being near humans was beneficial. This is why cats seem aloof by comparison: because this animal was not tamed in the traditional sense, but rather *chose* to be tamed, and thus still maintains an aura of independence.

Now some people might read the above and think the debate is over: cats won. On the contrary: the very reason to praise the intelligence of cats from thousands of years ago that recognized the benefits of working with humans, is exactly why dogs are set to categorically outpace them on intelligence.

Basically, dogs now actively have an evolutionary benefit from social intelligence and appealing to human desires. This means dogs are more attentive, pay more careful attention and seek to understand us as best they can. And because they're more attentive, their IQ is *growing* over centuries whilst cats stay comparatively stagnant. Their species has been rewarded for intelligence, and as such, we are unconsciously breeding smarter and smarter dogs just via our method of working with them.

It's really very simple: if you try to teach a cat and a dog a trick, the dog is more likely to listen and learn. And while yes, this isn't a sign of the cat being stupid so much as independent, in the same way one child that willingly goes to school to eagerly learn will eventually outpace another intelligent child that opts to stay home and nap instead, dogs are set to outpace cats in a more categorical way, it's just going to take generations and generations of slow evolution, so we are unlikely to notice this change over the course of our lifetimes. Allegedly, dogs today are smarter than the dogs of the dark ages though.

As an aside, there are other studies that looked at things like neuron count and yes, dogs consistently have the edge in these studies, just with the caveat "they're smart in different ways." I like referencing the above study because it focuses a bit more on an "inevitability" that in a distant future, this debate is likely to cease to be a debate at all.

In terms of survivability when alone, I think cats have the advantage because they can efficiently climb up stuff when the ground is too dangerous and can survive falls from quite high places.

I have a dog and he broke one of his hind legs by trying to jump up a chair once.

He's ok now, tho.

I feel bad for dogs. They've been bred to need attention and will be depressed if they don't get it. Cats on the other hand haven't been bred for that so when they want your love, you know it's cause they want it and not because they were bred to need it.

Domestic cats are one of the biggest treats to wildlife. They drive to extioncion a lot of birds, small reptiles and rodents. So if we are being 100% not bias cats are the superior choice
