Richie Havens rocked the world when he opened at the historic Woodstock concert in 1969. He was asked to continue his set as many of the musical acts were delayed in arriving because of traffic jams. He had run out of tunes when he decided to improvise a song based on the old spiritual ‘Motherless Child’. That song became his classic tune ‘FREEDOM’.

Richie’s father was Native American (Blackfeet) and his mother was from the West Indies. He spent a lot of time in Greenwich Village and Dean and Dudley Evenson used to frequently run into him in Washington Square Park. Later in 1973, Dean and Dudley videotaped Richie Havens performing at the State University of New York in Delhi. His rendition of ‘Freedom’ stands as a monument to his incredible talent and passion and is as relevant today as ever.
