To be fair Hoyo did him dirty. Story wise, he is supposed to be one of the most powerful people in the entire world. There are mountains and sceneries that exist because of the meteors he threw at his enemies. Yet somehow he had absolutely shit damage on release. He was just there to provide shields. Him belonging to the worst and most neglected element in the game also didn’t help

Zhongli's trailer showed him literally standing still while a bunch of enemies attacked him doing zero damage to him. Countless people somehow thought this meant he'd suck at defense and be the best damage-dealer in the game. I was facepalming for weeks.

Part of the reason why CN ppl are the most mad about that Zhongli drama was also bcs he was supposed to be the god that "represent China", just to add some context. In Genshin, each regions have a motif based off real life countries, and each have their own gods. Zhongli was actually a god for the region that's supposed to represent China, so the CN community was pissed on his release bcs they fucked up CN representation. ._."

Zhongli was the archon of Liyue, also known as not china, so the chinese fanbase got even more offended that the god that represents the country of China is one of the weakest ones there is, and took it as an insult and disrespect to the whole country, and they threaded on that way of thought, spiraling it into even being a pseudo anti-nationalism. This is likely what set off all the alarms, because to date, no other character has been buffed directly as him.

Take the example of Dehya. Dead on arrival, still dead. Some people say she's so bad that's even worse than Qiqi.

The geo resonance buff actually made Geo viable and much stronger. Ningguang became a hellfire barrage, Noelle went from just a shield buff to an insane tank with huge damage and crazy heal with near 100% uptime. Was actually satisfying to play Geo.

Zhongli's current state, best shielder in the game, you basically ignore 90% of enemy mechanics because his shield lets you facetank it without being interrupted.
If your willing to give up the damage from his party slot, you basically live on easy street because you can't die.

in the game before his buff, geo element like this character has little to do with the game mechanism in damage (elemental reaction) this game damage revolve around that. then his shield was on par with 4 star character that is easier to get copies from various sources, which angers players, "wtf is this 5 star archon?"

that was not the first time they made wonky or bugged character kit, but on zhongli case because CN players are making protest, they heard it and fix it. if not i doubt they will do anything about it. yae miko also has some probllems with her kit when released but not getting fixed till some complaints grow bigger in CN players, she finally get some fixes.

there are many things that needs fixing in the game that kills even new players motivation to upgrades the new characters, one of them is how materials to ascend (upgrade) characters like yae miko is locked in the deepest, farthest place enkanomiya through many quests, so if you got yae miko using $$, she will stay useless till you unlock the boss in enkanomiya. they can fix this with providing material exchange in gacha tab with limited amount (so that players needs to go to boss for further upgrades) but nothing done till now

Other characters have been buffed, but often its a shadow buff that's not announced.
E.g., Keqing doesn't step back as much after her charged attack, allowing her to better spam her best attack properly; whereas, in the past every two hits meant you were out of range.

He is actually really bad at release. To the extent that a c0 4 star character kit is much better than his at c0. Also adding to the fact that Venti (the first archon that's been released) trivialized the game with his elemental burst.

Its severely understarted how weak On release zhongli was. You get more value using other shielding character like diona or even noelle since their shield would actually sticks after a couple of hit. And ningguang exist. You can get insane damage from her with proper investment, some constellation and you will still have a shield with the amount of resonance you get.
