The Closer You Are to the Truth, the More Silent You Become Inside

One of my favorite authors, Ryan Holiday, said "Reading is supposed to be slow, it's hard. Speed reading is not a thing."


The speed reading crowd on Twitter reminds me of a marketing saying: "you can show how little you know by measuring the wrong thing." You can quantify how many books you read in 2019 -- you can't quantify how much (or how little) your life tangibly changed as a result of what you read. But which is more important?

I believe this "quieting" of your inner world also leads to greater empathy for others. As I've become "quieter" throughout the years, I've found myself less judgemental of people and more willing to consider different perspectives.

The large ears of the Buddha symbolize wisdom and compassion.

We already know our own story, so why not learn from others when you meet them. We can learn from people from all walks of life. Most people enjoy talking about themselves, so listening makes you likable, while you are learning.

Reading is something different then comprehending what is written. Actually understanding what I'm reading makes me go over sentences again and again until I've understood what I read. But it makes me feel dumb when I have to read a paragraph 5 times because it doesn't connect in my mind.

Since taking Navals advice on reading I enjoy it so much more. If you cant explain what you just read, its wasting time and foolimg yourself.
