Sewing Butterick 4790 Retro Wrap - The Walk Away Dress

#sewing #howtosew #sewingtutorial

Hi Everyone and Welcome Back To My Bucolic Life Channel. Meet my new sewing tutorial.

This time I am making a retro wrap dress, by request. So, because it is me there are a couple things I changed and wish I had changed but didn't. There is a low bust adjustment to make sure my darts aren't pointing to nothing... and also I made my own bias tape out of the same fabric instead of purchasing 1/4" double fold. About that bias tape, I sewed it on using what I think is a more trouble free method too. Anyhow, I hope you like it!

Great job in the walk-away. Nice to see someone make it without all the complaints. You just fix as you go and are so calm about the challenges. Love watching you! Keep up the good work!

By FAR THE BEST WALK AWAY DRESS tutorial I have seen. Your tried and true method for making this dress shines… Great job! The pattern has flaws in it but you overcame many of them. EXCELLENT!

this dress looks fabulous on you.
I cut out and sewed most of this dress in 2006 and then it sat in the naughty corner for years. Came out at the beginning of the pandemic and a lot of the fit issues I had on my note that was with it were different. Made some changes, got frustrated. Pulled it out again the February.
Couple of things I figured out: some similar wrap dresses/blouses from.the time had higher front armscyes and some people added a second higher fastener to bodice. I used elastic to connect the back. For the front closure, I ended up on a whim cutting off the ends of a broken belt and adding the buckle a d short piece of the eyelet end to the front .

Everything you stated as far as the alterations (shortened bodice, wider shoulders, to name a few) were the same changes I made to my version. I have a higher waist too and wider hips, so I had to change these things. I attached my bias tape exactly as you did. I tried it the way the pattern instructed and it was not as neat. I did make mine longer and added extra panels to the back of the inner sheath, with ties instead of a button so I could have coverage should an ill-timed gust of wind decide to blow my outer skirt up. This is one of those “try it their way first and then fix it your way later” type of patterns😊. Thank you for being so precise in your sew-alongs and explaining the why’s and how’s. This was a great tutorial❤

It looks beautiful on you. You have the figure for it. A red bra will do the trick with the arm holes. You’re young and the shortness of the front is really cute on you. Thank for remind us the trick with the clear polish. I always forget. 😊

I’m so glad you ‘Do You’❤ please don’t change or rush or any of that. My sewing skill has grown by leaps and bounds. I like YOUR ways and how you challenge me to read and edit. I never feel like I’ve wasted time watching your YouTube channel. And having you tell me what you don’t like about other people I probably don’t watch because of that very reason why I stopped watching them sorry..I digress. You look stunning! I love the Polish on your nails; I love the make and an inspired to make it..I have the pattern.. You look really nice. As always thanks for being authentically YoU!

I feel the exact same about reviews. I like watching tutorials, as I'm working. But, half the fun is the challenge of it and someone else's experience shouldn't deter you.

I have been wanting to make the walk away dress and watched several of the brave who made it on youtube. From watching, it appears the pattern will need alteration on fitting problems have noticed. I think I will make a mockup using old sheet so I will get the fit. I too use the same method of applying bias tape, I always get a perfect result! Love your old Singer, I have several hand cranks that I enjoy owing and puttering with, cleaning and sewing. The pretty little red dress, you did excellent and likely the best I've seen on youtube. You are lucky to have a nice smaller waist, looks pretty. I don't have much of a waist, my hips are very small so no hour glass for me.

You had way less problems than some of the other makes of this dress I have seen. For one thing, you are a great problem solver. Another thing is that I think others were using an original older pattern and the wrong size for themselves, sometimes, with some sizing up as well as adjusting to body shape. It looks like yours is a more modern remake pattern. I don't see how anyone could make this in a morning and wear it to lunch. Just making the bias tape would take me half the day. It came out really cute and the bright red suits you. Great job again!

Your a good sport Marie to take on this dress! Your fabric is very pretty 😊. The design of the dress seems to have notorious fit problems. Stay stitching and your seam finish choices were good. Having made lots of bias I would draw your lines for sure. Use the clear ruler it's 2" but if you have a longer one even better. When you sew it in the tube don't worry about the lines matching up. Just remember to off set that first width 😊. You can save a bit of time on the cutting if you lay your piece on the table making sure you have some lines matching with lines underneath you can cut up a ways on several strips. Hope this makes sense 😬 as it's hard to explain lol.
