Finally got this Sansui 771 working. Here’s the semi-short version of the story:

Picked up a used 771 for $100. It was a Facebook marketplace purchase . As-is. Northwest side of Chicago.Went through it and found out that the power supply 35v rail was bad. I’ve never seen a power supply go bad before and I couldn’t find anything wrong downstream. Unit has a reasonable amount amount of hours, but it seemed good based on all other checks. All fuses original and not blown!

Been on the lookout for another 771 to get either a new transformer or to part together. Corresponded with a guy locally in Warrenville, IL who had a bunch of electronics and sure enough had a 771 in his graveyard. For $20 I purchased one as-is with broken display, broken tuner, missing knob, crusty metal and case with broken slats.

Put the power supply from the parts unit into the main one. And it’s singing great tonight after a re-bias.

I really like this line of receiver, I have an 881 which is incredible, and 771 does not disappoint. I think I like the fact that the bass and treble has so much variability stands out, I mean, you don’t need an equalizer with this thing.

I rate the sound quality and performance very similar to the Sansui G-9000 or 8080db.

This receiver is underestimated. People misunderstand the power ratings (4o wpc) from the 1970s. I use the 771 in a 13-x14 room - I'm probably 10ft from the Micca MB42X receivers and I can barely put the volume at 3 (with Loudness button activated) without blowing out the windows. I had mine recapped and power supply needed repairs - so it's kind of rebuilt. This receiver's power delivery is amazing - more than enough to drive bookshelves. I'm sure the 771 would do fantastic with floor standing speakers. I keep the volume at 2 because it's pretty loud. Very clean sound with great definition. A real sleeper amongst the 1970s Sansuis.

Nice choice of vinyl! Those vintage albums sound f-ng incredible on analog receivers. I've been using a Fisher Studio Standard for decades.

Wish I still had mine. Lost it back in the 90's. Still looking & thinking about acquiring another one. I had some Kenwood speakers with it along with a Kenwood tape deck & some kind of record player. Bummer.
