The crazy MF known as Butch needs very little by way of introduction having given house music some of the most effective and classiest floor-pleasing jams over the last ten plus years. His Super Fluff Disco Stuff EP’s remain as fresh sounding as they did back in 2009 and show that he’s as comfortable fattening up and stretching out Disco edits as he is going super minimal on labels like Trapez or banging out bonafide classics like the Villalobas staple No Worries for Cecille. If ever there was a producer whose DJ sets inform his productions and vice versa it’s Butch, and if you’ve heard him DJ you’ll know he has a knack of building an intensity through the fattest, rolling bassline and percussive rhythms which never fails to light up the dancefloor. His partner on several of his more recent releases (including their most recent outing for Gerd Jansen’s Running Back titled Desire) is C.Vogt and here they join forces once again to give us the Vogue EP.
On the title track the duo go heavy on their 909, working up a tough beat with a pummelling kick that provides the foundation for a filtering square wave bassline. There’s a nod to mid nineties progressive house coming through in the gated vocal samples and ethereal pads and in true Butch style he builds the intensity making for a track which while deep, never strays far from the rave.
Next up we have Jimpster getting in on the action, taking a much more percussive and spacey approach. The bouncing bassline gives an old school, afrohouse touch and warm stabs dance around the groove as a twisted synth line weaves its way in and out of the mix. As with many of Jimpster’s productions it’s all about the slow-build and the subtle groove which, when dropped at the right time, will create a little bit of magic on the dancefloor.
Windeck follow next and sees Butch & C.Vogt veer off in a very different, altogether more 80’s-inspired direction. Crunchy beats with dubby syndrums are joined by a hooky bassline and building synth stabs for a track which treads a similar path to Todd Terje or Tensnake and feels both epic and large whilst remaining spacious and stripped back.
Closing out the EP Butch has given us a bonus edit of Vogue which has a deeper, dubbier feel with rolling snares replacing the keyboards leaving more space for the bouncing bassline to come to the fore.
