I'm currently double-majoring in Environmental Engineering and Philosophy. I think about this a lot. I see it everyday in how many of my teachers talk about the environment in terms of how it affects humanity. Sure, we talk about how humanity affects nature, but only when the way we affect it leads to consequences for us. There is a profound dissociation between the jobs of protecting the environment for its own sake me and my classmates long for when compared to what we are being trained to do.
