Inside Romania’s Witch School | Unreported World

Unreported World is with a coven of self-proclaimed witches determined to open Romania’s first ever witch school. Ashionye Ogene examines whether their novel approach could help thousands of women left behind by Romania’s education system.

On the outskirts of Bucharest lies the family home of a woman claiming to be Europe's most powerful witch. It’s here Mihaela Minca is planning an ambitious but controversial school that she hopes will give women from her minority Roma community a new chance at life. Half of the Roma gypsy community live below the poverty line, and most drop out of education due to poverty, discrimination and early marriage.

But not everyone is convinced by the magic this school offers. Witchcraft was forbidden during the communist era, and some politicians have tried to ban the practice altogether. The school also flies in the face of the Orthodox Christian church who believe witchcraft is an abomination.

I saw the hypocrisy when the priest was introduced and saw him doing pretty much the same thing witches do with his praying and practice. And how easy it is for him to have such a grand place to do his practice.

Mihaela is doing a good service. To me a witch is someone who is like a speech pathologist with an integrated holistic counselling degree. I am lucky to live in Australia and become a speech pathologist

I would be one of those tourists. I have never been to Romania because I was afraid of the poverty of people and sick animals on the streets but it looks much better. Two of my grandparents on each side were Romanian. I can understand some words.
