It’s the end of an era as the last payphone in New York City was removed on Monday. Payphones used to be a ubiquitous symbol of urban NYC (among other cities), but grew increasingly obsolete with the rise of LinkNYC kiosks, a network of thousands of charging & WiFi stations that replaced traditional phones beginning in 2015.

I used to remember a pay phone at every grocery store, gas stations and malls. There used to be at least tens of millions in the United States at one point. You could have drive down one street in minutes and count about a hand full.

What if you're on the street and can't afford a cell phone❓

I feel like they should have made it a tourist attraction. It would be a fun backdrop for social media pics lol

Cannot believe you New York. All the movies that I seen, all the memories of me fantasizing about being in one, now you take this dream away from me? I wasnt even planning on going to NY, but this is on You! 😠 What am I gunna say to my non existent grand children when I cannot show them this, and now I would not travel to do such a thing, but maybe? I mean this is deeply troubling, I am concerned with the pay phone authority’s ability to retain(continues to ramble on for ten min)…

It’s funny how we try to move forward but keep taking steps backwards
Pay phones are a thing of the past and yet we have smart phones with a clamshell design
Now watching as they replace it with something else like a phone booth or something that doesn’t solve any real important problems

Hopefully they send it to the Smithsonian

So if you don’t have a cell phone now what do you do now?

It could be bad if there is a natural disaster and you need to get help, have no phone but instead few quarters

May be not today or in the foreseeable future, but loss of the pay phones will come back to bite us on the butt. Remeber 911 and the lines of people waiting to use payphones, because all other forms of communication was jammed, remember anytime since then when communication was no only loss but was impossible because of weather, sun spots, hacking of the system or governments both here and abroad not have emergency preparations inplace or because they were flexing their egos and muscles and having passing contest!
I don't have enough fingers and toes to count that high and that is why I find the loss of old school communication systems scary!
