Don't forget that when slavery was abolished, the slave 'owners' were very generously compensated by the government (in the UK) for having to give up the slaves. Many wealthy establishment figures today derive their inherited wealth from ancestors' slave ownership or compensation for giving up slaves. Of course, the compensation came from the public funds, so the rich essentially got huge public handouts....
