The Semiahmoo Rotary Club, in association with the White Rock Rotary Club, is pleased to present the first annual Service Above Self Surrey Youth Awards.

The SASSY Awards honour youth aged 16 to 21 who are living in Surrey or White Rock, and are making a difference in our community by demonstrating the Rotary ideal of Service Above Self.

Six Awards were presented this year in the categories of:
Youth Leadership
Community Service
Humanitarian
Against-the-Odds
Athletic/Sportsmanship
Performing and Visual Arts
Cultural Diversity

Each Award recipient received a $500 bursary, as well as $500 to donate to a registered
charity of their choice and a stylized SASSY Award trophy.

The 1st Annual SASSY Awards Show was held the evening of Friday Oct. 14 at the Bell Centre for Performing Arts in Surrey. It was an inspiring evening honouring youth who have made a difference in our community as well as showcasing young local performers.

The 2011 SASSY Against-The-Odds Award was presented to Jonathon Davidson.

John graduated with honours from Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary (Aboriginal Program) in 2011 and now attends Kwantlen University in the Business Program.

He is an Aboriginal student who has defied all odds (single family home with low socio-economics), has played football and became an honour roll student. He is a humble person who has spent his time mentoring young football players. John was featured on CTV's High School Hero program entitled "An athlete who has overcome obstacles" and on CTV's First Story.

John donated $500 donation to the Canadian Diabetes Society.
