Why are moths attracted to flames?

It is well known and observed that insects are attracted to artificial light, but the why and how have not been understood so far. In a new study from US and UK, researchers studied hundreds of flight paths and found a reason. ThePrint #̦PureScience, Sandhya Ramesh explains.

Lighting up the sky wastes electricity and doesn't even do anything useful. Reducing unnecessary artificial light, especially light that shines upward into the sky, would also reduce light pollution and make it easier to see the stars at night. The night sky in my city always glows a sickly orange color from sodium vapor street lights reflecting off the haze.😢

Is that the case with lights in all spectrums? I mean, you did mention that the scientists studied the effects under artificial, UV, and diffused lights, but what I'm wondering is, if the presence of light regardless of spectrum makes the insects go through the dorsal light response or if there's a way around it using certain spectrum of light which is both viable for humans and at the same time not attractive to insects?

Very cool study but kind of sad as well, so the moths rely on light to help coordinate their flight pattern in a way, but artificial light disorientates them and is hurting them.

Doesn't explain why they have the light response. What is the evolutionary reason for this?

I had imagined it is because they use the moon light to navigate. All this fancy explanations are so boring. Get at the heart of it please.
