First thing you hear, to my ears, is the room ambiance on the kit and an energy that pushes the drums forward or more "in your face"(a perceived clarity) but, I can see in a soft rock or an easy listening setting less compression would be desirable as well...

As a bass player I usually compress my bass so I get a even tone

The stock compressors in S1 are actually sooo good. Like, worth a decent amount on their own.

IMHO I don't compress much during mixing. Plugins tend to have compressor and many samples are equalized and compressed from the start

That compression is rather aggressive.
Compression is important in modern music in order to get the sound you need for more aggressive genres.

"Same peak level" probably means "maximiized". Why not say so? Compression alone doesn't make the drums louder.
