I was watching the 6th game of Magnus versus Iturrizaga at 1:11:34, having Stockfish 9 calculating the position alongside the game, and it was amazing to see how Magnus just kept playing the moves the engine recommended, even when we were talking slow positional moves. After having fianchettoed both bishops on move 6, Stockfish agrees with EVERY SINGLE CARLSEN MOVE from move 7-18 (disagreed on move 19, where it preferred fxg6 over Rae8).

What a machine.

2:03:02 BigMak2500 is a genius. After getting a hopelessly losing position he finds a creative way to win: disrespects his opponent by not resigning, opponent tries to teach him a lesson by giving him a false hope of stalemate, opponent gets forfeited by mod for wasting everyone's time, BigMak2500 wins.

This guy's chess is just way too good. Even though he doesn't get edges in his opening play, he somehow manages to absolutely crush in the middle/endgame. Best player to ever live.

not sure how people can keep saying "magnus isn't as good as his rating" or "magnus is isn't the best player in the world." chess is hard, and this guy keeps crushing people. his awareness and positional understanding is unparalleled.

"The working-class Grandmaster is being punished by Carlsen here." Very nice Eric.

I love that Magnus doesn't usually stream, it looks way cooler to see him pop up in events.

1random might be a rare type of NM who never learned how to mate with two queens. It's really not easy unless you know the technique.

Can we please have Magnus every week just to get the most energetic version of Eric? :) Seriously though, great stuff, thanks for the upload.

Eric, the way you commentated and anticipated most of Magnus' play still makes me believe you have what it takes to win this tourny. Holding out for the day a Chessbrah wins TT

Eric is my favorite commentator for these types of tournaments.

Eric Hanson might lack a little va-va-voom as a commentator but his chess insight and vision is exceptional. The speed he sees ideas and tactics gives me an insight of the mind of a 2500, yet a lone a 2800. I think he pattern/idea recognition in the Carlsen- Chandra game is fantastic. Great work Eric.

Actually, you're forgetting that every time a piece is captured the count starts over, so he can also give up his queens as needed to prolong the count, and if that was the goal, he could have engineered black into having a pawn to promote and that would have added a whole bunch of moves if they were conspiring the make a really long game.

Magnus' game against Itturizaga was certainly the highlight here. Neither player made obvious blunders, but black managed to increase the pressure very methodically.
