I am a Solo Hiker, my best advice, never go up, if you can't go back down the same way, and vice versa. And take the long way, regardless of how tempting the short path may seem.

Safety Tip: Do not hike alone. I can’t tell you how many people I rescued who were alone and lost or hurt. Luckily all lived.

My condolences to her family. I hike alone. It's spiritual for me. But I always tell my family where I'll be and when to expect me home. And never to a spot I haven't hiked many times.

Hiking solo on long trails is fantastic but not something for novices. One has to be extra careful about falling and hypothermia, - the two most common things to get you.

If you're going to hike solo, it's always wise to tell someone or leave a note to when and where you are hiking. Have a day pack that includes first aid, fire starter, a small mirror, potable water tabs, etc. I include all stated and cigars and a side arm.

My prayers go out to her family and friends. To lose a loved one at any age and circumstances is painful but to lose a young, presumably heath family member in such a unexpected manor is tragic and doubly painful.
As to those that take this opportunity in a attempt to be witty regarding a young woman's death show the authors to be considered half wits instead.
I would hope her family and friends be comforted as mourn her passing. If any could rather learn from this that a starting out point and at least the general direction that they intend to take be given to a trusted person or at least left in a highly visible location in their house that include all of those details. Any hiker should plan for being out at least 3 times that they expect to be. and pack water, energy bars for that lenght of time. Necessary gear must include a compass, lightweight reflective blanket, simple first-aid supplies, a knife and a whistle (whistles can be heard over a long distance and take much less effort to be heard. We include a sharpe walking stick and a distress strobe these are getting lighter, brighter and longer lasting all the time.

If you must seek your alone-time in the "wild, " make sure to let your close contacts know where you are going and when you will be back. Always take more water than you think you might actually need. There's quite a bit of equipment you can easily fit into a small pack that will make surviving unexpected hazards much more likely - first aid kit, space blanket, pocket knife, just to name a few allrounders. They don't weigh much and they are pretty much always useful.

As far as wildlife goes (including predatory humans), you can't rely on calling for help. If you've bothered to train with them, take a handgun or a taser. Otherwise, maybe mace or pepper spray?

Use Strava and link your family. My brother in law was found thanks to this APP he was mountainbiking and got knocked out by a cable, He was unconscious for 30 minutes until found

Why do so many of these hikers, rock climbers and general outdoor loving folks go by themselves? Anything can happen but at least if someone is with you, you might stand a better chance of surviving to be rescued. So sad that this young woman lost her life doing something that she enjoyed. I hope her family and friends find some measure of peace.
