Sharpening up the Kizer Mystic in REX 45 STEEL

Kizer runs all their high end steels soft unfortunately. I collected a bunch of data on cutting tests I did this year and Civivi’s 9CR actually out cut Kizer’s S90V, M390, and S35VN.
I had been noticing the edge retention on all my Kizer’s just wasn’t what it needed to be. I use them daily at work a lot, and I was having to sharpen them every day. Yes sharpen them- not strop them every day because they were way beyond stropping after a 10 hour shift. So that got me thinking and I sent 2 of them to Peter’s Heat Treat in the USA- the S90V HRC tested at 58.3 and the M390 at 57.6. That told me everything I needed to know. Sad, sad, sad!

And this is why, Spyderco has and always will be the standard in the knife industry. The heat treatment is just planets ahead of the rest.

Jared I left you a comment on another video about sharpening D2 steel and i was wondering could you maybe do a video of different knife steels and what stones and strops you find work best for them?

I wish they would make the brat with some more options than 154cm. It’s an awesome knife and 154 is good but we need more

No normal production company that I've encountered is up to par with spyderco on heat treat and grinds, mainly speaking of golden colorado variants, seki city does k390 well but I've had some bad grinds from them, the worst grind was a endura wharncliffe k390, which they normally do what us perfect, but this was more of a mild s shape which was pretty bad for them

The fact that they run it soft is the singular reason I didn't bother picking it up. It's just wasted effort. I wish they'd gone with S35VN or even 154CM.

Spyderco Rocks! BM has some excellent knives but when they skin you to the bone, ain't much need for a 🔪!

Kizer told me they ran the Rex45 at 62-64 hrc but they could be lying 🤥

Yea I figured, there 10v is a joke! It's so soft 420 will out cut it, not even 420HC just regular 420
