When I was running my baking business, I learned to have a NO return and refund policy unless there were extreme circumstances.

Here are my favourite baking essentials from Amazon (these are either the same or similar products to what I use in my videos):

As someone who has food allergies… That was on the person PLACING the order to ask BEFORE taking the order out of the shop! So wrong to demand a refund when it’s not the shops responsibility to be nut free!

So they forgot to order in advance, luckily found a place to take their order, then forgot to ask if it was a peanut free facility and demanded a refund. Ridiculous.

Genuine question: Isn't it kinda the customer's fault for not ordering cupcakes with specific instructions such as for them to be made entirely nut free or atleast just asking and checking her facts right before hand? It's not like your business markets itself as a nut-free bakery. Though as someone whose mum has a severe milk allergy, I kinda get where the customer is coming from, but at the same time, if it was me, I'd accept it to be my fault for not ordering right.

I personally will stand my ground and say you didn’t ask or you didn’t specify sorry I can’t help plus we stayed after hours to do something you asked for

No I’m sorry they didn’t deserve that refund. THEY have an obligation to look out for their child, if it was a scary time for you it should have been a priority for them as well and on top of that you guys had to STAY BEHIND. No I’d only refund half or so but not the entire order that’s on them. Customers aren’t always right

Honestly, I would rather lose money than a child have an allergic reaction. (I'm sure anyone would.) But the lady demanding a refund was out of line. She did not inquire prior to purchasing. That is on her. But on the other side I see it from a business standpoint as well.. It's easier to give the irrational customer what they want as opposed to them pitching a fit in a store. Or on social media.

At best I would have negotiated to go “Half-ies” WITH return of product. You are not a huge money making bakery that could absorb the cost. Definitely the cost of this experience is what I chalk up to as an “expensive lesson”. You went out as a special order, almost sounds like buyer’s remorse. You are an amazing decorator. Thank you for sharing.

The thing that piss me off tho is they won’t tell me till I’m done and I stated on my ad that if you have allergies please let us know beforehand. And I even ask them before any allergies? Most say so but some won’t say or make any importance of it until the order was already done.

Allergy to everything here - This was a Dick move to expect the Bakery to “eat” their ordering mistake . Seriously I would of refunded partial order but still made them pay for the cost of ingredients . If it mattered that much they would f at least double checked at pick up . So many people are Karens

This hurts so much. The bottom line suffers, and even your ability to function the next day suffers. I think from now on, just remind customers with every order, “we are not a nut free facility.” This doesn’t mean you won’t try to work with them, but you’re being upfront and pellucid. When I have a customer who does this to me, I know I’ll be doing with less for a while. I hope they would have had mercy on you for that fact… but sounds like they didn’t. I’m sorry this happened to you. 🧡🧡🧡🧡

Yep! I am not in your industry, but I learned the hard way, a long time ago, that last-minute clients are a NO for me!

I'm sorry that happened. Its unfortunate they wont tell you till after that there are allergies. You do such great work!

I think it’s definitely up to the customer, to let you know if there are allergies. You’re not a mind reader.

It's the buyer's fault. They can't expect that the order will be refunded when they did not specify about the allergy. If it were me, I would just give away the food to a homeless shelter instead of expecting the seller to shoulder a loss on my mistake.

Sounds like someone wanted free cupcakes… if they don’t ask in advance, it’s not a real problem. Take it from someone with food restrictions. Scam!

Totally understandable and even though the clients were given a refund you were honest enough to say you weren't peanut free from allergies. Good lesson on your part thank you for sharing I appreciate it😃👍🏼🎉

We have allergies, too. She inappropriately put her responsibility on you. Awful. I’m sorry this happened. Beautiful cookies!! 🍪

Ugh! They should have known better! I never forgot to ask everywhere we went....BEFORE we ordered. It's life threatening. How do you not ask ahead of time??? Very few places are peanut or nut free. Wow.

I don’t work at a bakery or in the baking business but I work at a clothing store and situations similar to this happen all the time. There will be times where I work at the registers and we have people come in all the time with returns or exchanges but they don’t have the receipt. Our store policy is that we need a receipt within 28 days after the purchase in order to do an exchange or return and we end up letting a lot of people slide because they complain about it.
