Adm. Mike Mullen: Report shows ‘deterrence is actually failing’ in U.S-China relations over Taiwan

The Council on Foreign Relations has released a report on U.S-Taiwan relations following Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s trip to Beijing where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. While in China, Blinken and Xi agreed to stabilize the deteriorating relationship between the U.S and China, but did not agree to resume military to military contact, something the U.S. considers vital to prevent any miscalculations, especially over Taiwan. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Michael G. Mullen and former Deputy Director of National Intelligence Susan Gordon join Andrea Mitchell to discuss. “Our report lays out our belief that deterrence is actually failing. It hasn't failed for obvious reasons because we're not in conflict,” says Mullen. “We need to build up that deterrence, in a very strong way so that the Chinese leadership will never decide now's time to go to war and take Taiwan back.”

What happens today relative to Taiwan is very similar to a nowadays forgotten situation that happened between 1930-1936: the "Sudeti" question. Hitler's Third Reich wanted at any cost the "return" to this border portion of Checoslovakia to Germany for political and historical reasons. The western democracies agreed, hoping that Hitler would be happy and stop his ambitions. We all know what effectively happened in 1938 ( Austria annexation) and in 1939. Today the situation, mutatis mutandis, is the same

It is time for good people of the world (who can still vote) to stop playing around and put a 500%+ tariff on ALL dictatorships and theocracies. Free trade should only be with free people. All democracies must join together in a free-trade union to finally make all governments accountable to their people by taking the profit out of oppression. Discounts can be given to encourage improvements, but we must be consistent. Domestic tax reductions and rebates will make this tariff cost the consumer nothing. In fact, this would eventually make all countries more prosperous as well as peaceful. No excuse not to start now.

My uncle who served in the military for 30 years said back in the 70's the u.s. acts like a baby sitter to the world and one day the world will turn against the u.s. He was correct.

Taiwan is semiconductors - and it's an island of about roughly 380 km times 140km in size, and over a small straight of seas 180 km distant of 1.5 billion chinese people on mainland China - and of course they are one race and share the same language. Whereas Hawaii is 8400 km away and US westcoast all in all about 12.500 km.

And there are at least four main well known semiconductor production regions in the world - USA, Israel, Taiwan and Mainland China (PRC).

And I bet I know how the deal will go - Mainland China will outcompete all the others sooner or later within the next two a three decades - to go to war with anybody for Taiwan for China is of no use - if the whole world could just and simply become outcompeted.(1)

It would be wise of China - and China is wise today - not to spend time, money, effort and reputation on achieving Taiwan - if they simply use there abilities and efforts best and most correct.

Think of the Deutsche Reich 'having had hudge shipyards on Helgoland in the north sea' - (forget about it, but think of Norfolk, Virginia instead - and time passes by, (2)).

1 - Sometimes the simple use of time and market forces in the end may still be of superior nature, true?

2 - A strategic move would be to ask TMSC to build up an all new world class production somewhere in Arizona, New Mexico or around Salt Lake City - and fade out the top tiers at Taiwan Island. (ROBP - reducing overseas blackmail potential - maybe way cheaper and way more effective on the long run as well.)

There is one way and one way ONLY to deter China from annexation of Taiwan: international coalition guaranteeing their security. We need Japan, we need Australia, and we need the Phillipines, at minimum. We need NATO for the Pacific.

Barring that, a full-scale war with China over the island with just the US will have enormous costs for both sides, but China eventually wins out of pure attrition and determination (nationalist imperative). The US military is not built, and never was, for a war of attrition. We win through overwhelming superiority in firepower and technological advantage, advantages we simply don't have anymore against China.
