World's second largest hydropower station hits new record in electricity generation

The Baihetan Hydropower Station is the world's largest hydropower station under construction. It has generated over 10 billion kWh cumulatively as of May 5, 2022. The Baihetan Hydropower Station is located on the Jinsha River and straddles the provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan. After completion, it will be equipped with 16 hydro-generating units, each with a capacity of 1 million kilowatts, the largest single-unit capacity in the world. The last two generating units of the hydropower station have entered the run-up stage to the full-scale entry into operation.

The last of the 16 units are being tested for commercial operation. That is great because the station took just 5 years to build. It was opened in July 2021 as planned with just two units starting the operation. The rest of the 14 units are scheduled to be all operational 12 months later. Thus everything has been as scheduled for the world's second biggest power plant in the world. If this station were to be built outside China it would take twice as long and cost possibly a few times more.
