"odds are you don't own a 3d printer and don't know anyone who does"

Sheepishly glances at the 2 spare printers on the shelf behind me

The crazy part is 3d printing has a niche profitable application (custom parts), but gamblers can turn anything into a ponzi scheme

Honestly, I'm super grateful that Cathie Wood and Co. subsidized falling 3D printing companies for as long as they did 😂. The tech is pretty cool and its become so affordable that my local library can afford to have a few on standby.

As a CNC machinist, this video put a smile on my face. I swear a few years ago everywhere I worked people were panicking about printers taking our manufacturing work. The sky is falling… a few years later and I’ve come across 1 shops using a couple of printers to rapid prototype (the bread and butter for that company was still being done on a couple of Haas CNC) but mostly the printer fad seems to have come and gone. Meanwhile the shop I’m at now is still investing in new mills, multi axe lathes and Swiss machines.

I feel kinda dumb when I look back and reflect on all the times I thought my job was obsolete.

As someone who owns 7 3D printers I can confirm they are a pain in the ass… but pretty cool when working properly

If a company goes public via SPAC it is not for investors only speculators.

Oh, also….molding is not how 95% of aerospace parts are made. That’s very niche. Most are machined down from stock, nearly nothing is molded for production anymore. Nobody wants steel slag operations on hand, man.

It feels good saying I'm outperforming Cathie Wood on the year.

I'm a mechanical engineer and for years I've been saying 3D printing has been over-hyped. Yes it has it's uses, but they're niche compared to traditional manufacturing as the video says. Inevitably there's always that manager that thinks it's cool and wants to impress his boss by trying to make it fit into product lines, but it never really does.

New technology is wonderful but it's almost impossible to tell which of the dozens of companies will succeed.

I mean the real advtage of a 3D printer is that on super small scale it allows individuals to make stuff at a fraction of the cost. But your selling it to individuals, the few people that maybe would need a print farm, or the R&D department that will use it to make quick prototypes rather then take up machine time in the floor. Yea as an individual my printer has been great and I do use it a lot….. but I still break out my dad’s old tools if I need to make something more heavy duty.

A 3D printer is like a lathe, working backward. There are no lathes sold at supermarkets...

Nobody want to engineer and print out 25 parts before they get it right to fix some stupid issue that a $15 part from a local shop would fix perfectly.

Prusa and Bambu printers are pretty good at this point, if you can read an instruction manual and do basic troubleshooting then you'll see success making your parts. However, it is true that CAD and basic engineering knowledge is needed to reach full potential with printing

"Everyone thought there will be a 3D Printer in every household" Did they or did a couple companies say that to get more investment and Cathie Wood "analyst" did fall for it?

I cast metal, 3d printing is great for making mold templates, and anything that can't be cast can usually be made by casting and machining. Sure, there are extreme cases in the aerospace industry that can be made easier (but less strong) than traditional methods, but over all my job is safe as I do products with high value and medium size production runs.

My architecture office got a Form 4 printer.
was really cool, we could make many miniature models and steel connections details with operable nut/bolts to show the clients.
they were like kids, eyes lite up, playing with the printed models, assembling them and disassembling them.
after the meeting one of the client asked if he can keep the models. we gave it to him and ended up getting two contracts in the future with them
