This is literally it. When trying to write a catchy pop song, don't try to write a pop song. Write a nursery rhyme instead and then simply change up the root chords a bit and write some lyrics about how you miss her, love her or how she's making you lose your mind.

How to easily write a song:
1. Take the melody from another song.

When he went to the 4 chord I immediately blurted out "bad habits"

Man, FINALLY a teacher on YouTube who’s telling the audience about SPECIFIC functional harmony tactics to build songs! This is amazing, I can’t wait to watch every single video

Step 1. Rip a line the size of a Florida gator tail.
Step 2. Grab your grandpops acoustic.
Step C. Hit record and upload it to YouTube.

It takes a lot for me to subscribe to new channels but yours is a no brainer. Your teaching style is refreshing and totally unique. My interest in the instrument is peaking again, largely due to practicing a lot of what your shorts are teaching

Pretty cool man.
I am realizing that I actually do this often without understanding it the way you do. This is very helpful. God has told me a number of times, “those who understand music will often make the best music.”
So I am eager to get understanding of music. I’ve had a few guitar teachers tell me I should study music theory but I haven’t had time to do that. That’s on my agenda as well.

Thank you for taking the time to make these. May God bless you, you are a blessing to us all, brother.

Here's a little help to those who are new to the number system. Play the major scale (do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti) and convert it to number's 1 to 7 (8th is an octave). So in his example, he is using the key of Ab, so that's going to be your #1 or root. Now when he says the 4 chord; it is simply the #4 of your major scale and that's Db. From this point on you should be able to read and play chord progressions like for example 1-4-5 or 2-5-1 etc.

Find an existing public domain melody, put it over an interesting and different chord progression and add different lyrics ... Voila, modern pop.

Some people seem like they are criticizing this as being incomprehensible…..this is literally BASIC music theory. Take a couple days to learn it people, it’s not witchcraft or a “creativity killer”. Great video 👍
