As Larry Forman himself will tell you, Field Sobriety Tests are VOLUNTARY, always refuse these tests.

When you took the training, did they ever discuss the history of the FST or how the tests were developed and by who?

From a ortho/neuro point of view they are ridiculous.

First problem, outside of a clinical setting.

Uneven surfaces, changing light and weather conditions, cars flying by, and more importantly, fear of arrest.

Any clinician would be committing malpractice to make a positive diagnosis in that setting, especially if the conditions were not documented as aggravating factors. Aggravating meaning highly contributing to the result by complicating performance.

Yes, you absolutely have to tip your head back, and close your eyes. The problem is, that if 6ou have sinus issues, or inner ear issues (the same thing basically) you won't perform well stone cold sober. As far as I know, they never ask that question, and should be a vulnerability

Always refuse these tests you don’t have to take them. Just helping them build a case against you. But even sober if I tilt my head back close my eyes and try this I get off balance a little and missed the tip of my nose. These tests are meant to have you fail.

As Ron White said, these aren't sobriety tests these are agility tests and I'm not very god damn agile. x)

I tell them "I don't answer questions" then they say if you don't answer questions your going to jail. I say we'll I go to jail. I just don't answer questions. And off to jail we go.

Aren't there driver's license sanctions in some states for refusing to perform a FST? Or is that only for refusing a breathalyzer?

Taking the ride isn't easy for everyone. Especially if you can't get bailed out, or have to settle with a public pretender etc...

We don't have this tosh in the UK. Straight to roadside breath test. Pass and you are on your way, fail and down to the station for an evidentiary breath test on the big machine, blow twice, lower of the results is used or, rarely, blood test.

They also get real chatty to judge if u slur, speak/think slow, etc. I recently passed 30 min of testing while the partner searched my car. By the end guy was quizzing me about our location & other random facts.
I didn’t care- I actually kept chatting with him about family life & stuff…
