Long considered the “gold standard” for scientific research, randomized control trials (RCTs) have become more frequent in education research since the Institute of Education Sciences prioritized them in 2002. However, RCTs may not meet the “gold standard” for usefulness, as evidenced in findings from Alan Ginsburg and Marshall Smith’s new AEI whitepaper. Their identification of bias in 27 RCTs in IES’s What Works Clearinghouse raises the question: Do RCTs meet the “gold standard”?

Please join AEI as an expert panel, moderated by AEI’s Nat Malkus, debates the role of RCTs in education studies, effective implementations of RCT interventions, and the potential implications for K–12 education policy.
