After years of searching and experimenting, I have found THE PERFECT string gauge for Drop B tuning for myself. Maybe you'll love it too? Let me know what gauge you like in drop B or other drop tunings!

Please check out my Thomann affilate links to some of their awesome gear that I use -

Thanks for this vid. Yeah been playing in drop C for 2 years now and I definitely like 10's and 11's for that tuning.

I've been learning guitar for about 9 months now and already have a guitar dedicated for Drop tuning. I use the Ernie Ball Mammoth's, as I go as low as Drop A#, and I think it could probably even do Drop G on a 24 3/4 scale. It was setup at a shop in Drop C, so the intonation is probably a bit off now with the ups and downs it goes through, but it works just fine for practice.

I just use Not Even Slinky on my strat and they feel great. Coming from someone that used Skinny Top Heavy Bottom for drop C on Gibson scale length.

I see lots of players use a wound G instead of an unwound (plain) string, however a plain string has more tension than a wrapped string of the same size. You can use a string tension calculator just to verify. That being said I exclusively use 13-62 (d’addario) for drop B on my telecasters because I find that greater tension is better for single coils because tension equals twang. I exclusively use the neck pickup on single coil guitars.
I use 12-54 (d’addario) for 24.75” humbucker guitars.
I find that less tension sounds meaner for humbucker equipped guitars when using the bridge pickup.
I also never use Ernie ball. Those strings go bad very quickly.

Great video I bought a couple packs of the not even slinky’s and some single string packs of the 22 wounds for my 24.75 inch scale Gibson. And the tone and tension are great. Ever so slightly loose. But it’s pretty much as good as you’re gonna get. Plus them being slightly loose makes long play sessions a lot easier on the fingers.

I use daddario nyxl size 13. Been using them for over 10 years. Keeps the tension feeling like a standard tuning and doesn't sound sloppy at all. Super bright cleans and a crisp dirty tone

I use 12-60 for my PRS Custom 24 for drop c and 12-62 for my Schecter for Drop B. I like heavier strings but I mostly play rythmn.

I have the normal gauge strings but I use a whammy drop tune pedal to get any tuning if you want one it’s amazing you can play all the slipknot and korn you want you don’t even need a 7 string anymore you can get 7 string tuning with 6 strings it’s amazing if you like drop tuning without actually tuning you will love it just leave your guitar in drop d tuning and switch the tuning you want on the pedal it can be drop A B C D F G it goes up 7 semitones and down 7 semitones i love it I don’t even own a special guitar or anything crazy and it sounds beautiful so if you want to never need special string gauges buy you one it’s like 300 dollars but I promise it will change your life in the guitar world

I find 10-52’s fine if you set your guitar up right. Currently have played drop B with that set in a PRS Custom 22 and a Fender Flathead Tele.
I know it subjective but I find, the higher the guage the more lowend is present and if you lower the guage and it becomes abit tighter and obviously easier on the hands which is a bonus.
Gotta keep the original source of the tone the tightest it can be especially with Drop B as 99% of this tuning is metal based.

I use set of 10 with 18 for the E and 50 on the B. Pretty stable if you don't chug that hard, and you got that clarity you won't get with thick strings

i know this video is a bit older but ernie ball does make a 12-56 set with a wound 22 g. its literally the same set as the not even slinky's but with the one string switched. magnum slinkys. they looks similar to the mammoth slinky packaging color but just double check them and youll be fine

I sold my PRS and found a copycat company called IYV from Korea that sells a similar style guitar for around $175. The neck is way thicker than a PRS which was disappointing but everything else about it is solid. Figured maybe since it has a thick neck, it could handle heavier strings at least. Just not sure about filing the nut and possibly having to replace the tuners and borrow a set from a 7 string so it will fit through the peg hole better. I tried thicker strings on my PRS and I had to jam the E string through the hole and it didn’t sit in the nut correctly and I didn’t feel comfortable filing the nut myself so I just ended taking them back off.

You hit the nail on the head with the 56 is on the Les Paul's or Gibson guitars I got three Gibson guitars and that's what I put on them and they sound great staying tuned I was using 54s before that and it wasn't worth a shit so you hit the nail on the head with that brother
