Hydraulic jacks are not meant to keep a vehicle up for extended periods of time, since it may cause the seals to weaken and eventually fail. That's what jack stands are for.

Never *EVER* get underneath a car held up with just a jack. No matter how careful you are a seal in the jack could always fail. It's a one in a million but it will kill you.
