Genius. Thank you. I don't do upholstery but this is fascinating - and a technique that I might try elsewhere.

+Kat Quinn I agree, as the french seam is the strongest seam and is used where strength is needed. Seat bottoms get more lateral movement as people get in and out. I was shown to use a "Backer" material with it oriented without the stretch found in different types of material. Yes, it take more time and I use a little adhesive to hold it in place, but doubles the stitches strength. It may have been omitted for the purpose of the video. Looks good, but strength is normally why one would choose the french seam. Good demo though.

Hey man great video, does trimming back so far not risk weakening the seam? Also what backing material options would you suggest to reinforce French seams? Huge thanks in advance

Really interesting vídeo, and very crearly explained. I have seen other vídeos explaining the same method, but this is the one that explains it more clearly. Thanks a lot! :-)

Your machine is very smooth and produces very good looking stitches... I guess that your motor is a servomotor one, very controllable and you can sew stitch by stitch. May I ask the brand and model of machine and motor? Thanks!

Edited: I have just seen the vídeo in which you unbox and explain about this machine, the SAILRITE FABRICATOR. And, as you say, it is a very good machine for the money!! Thanks again!!

is there a benefit to pulling the beginning strings forward and to the side as you begin sewing?

Thank you so much for the tip. I have a questions for am going to be putting a couple of french seams into a motorcycle seat that doesnt currently have any. Would 1/8 sewing seam look better on Vinyl? Also how much material should I give myself when I cut the original seat to do the french seam?

Hey I'm new to sewing and taking an upholstery class in my town. What is your take on different feet attachments for your machine? Zipper feet vs topstitch foot, vs welting foot, vs binding feet, glove feet etc? Is it worth investing in a assortment of feet if i'm starting out? Thanks in advance.

A true French seam is when you do what you did, except you stitch a another piece of leather over your seam allowance. This is where the strength of the French seam comes into play.

Cutting tooo close for my liking.
I'd always be waiting for the whole thing to come apart under stress.
But that's just me. 🤷‍♂️

Thank you for your tutorial but this is not a French seam. You’re just taking the bulk out of a regular seam. Then you top stitched your seam on both sides. 😏

Thanks for showing this - but this video really was way too long for what you showed.

Actually you didn’t sew a French seam but a fake French seam, there is no more strength than a normal stich
