Weathering model trains with pan pastels, or trying new weathering techniques can sometimes be a daunting if you’ve never done it before. This video takes a step back and gives some tips and advice on how to try something you’ve never tried before, or how to get comfortable in working your way through a technique that might be new to you, whether it is weathering with pan pastels or anything else you want to try.

This is an updated version of the combo set that I started with. The advantage of this newer version is that if you wanted to swap out needle sizes, it can be done with upgrade kits, and it comes with different sizes of paint cups. It comes with a 0.3mm needle as standard. This also comes with the same compressor that you saw in the video. I’ve been very happy with my setup. It has done everything I’ve asked it to. Fittings on this airbrush and hose are ⅛” which are compatible with Iwata hoses.

Hey John, another great video. Glad to see ya getting into Pan Pastels. I’ve been using them for several years now. I know they come with the sponge applicators, but I like brushes better. Short stiff brush for heavily weathered areas, and a real soft makeup brush for blending. I use the blending brush most of the time, even when applying the initial layer. You can get a real light touch that way, useful for fading.

I don't remember if you mentioned it or just showed it, but using toilet rolls to hold your body shells while you paint them is genius. My wife is going to wonder why there is a forest of loco bodies and parts suspended on toilet rolls in the laundry.

I thought the video was totally useless. It only shows the guy yacking and some experiments he tried. He actually doesn't show you how to use PanPastel.
Skip it!
