Panasonic GH6 Dynamic Range Boost is useless in Vlog.

I posted a video yesterday with the gh6 and this video is pretty much me complaining about the DR Boost function. I see it useless if I cant get good skin tones. Maybe im spoiled by Blackmagic.
The clips in the video were shot with the Panasonic gh6 at 2000 iso with DR Boost and converted to rec 709 in resolve.

I am linking the raw footage for download.

Thanks for posting the raw footage! It's been helpful. It IS very noisy. But I also see how much better the colors are. Hm....

I have to disagree my friend. Just shot some test footage of my own. With Dr boost in vlog... The image is MUCH cleaner with way better DR than with Dr boost off and I just can't find any noise all the way up to 8000 iso after the image is properly corrected and using ettr. I would not shoot with Dr boost off. This camera with Dr boost on is 10x cleaner than footage from my gh5

FWIW, per intercepter121, you don't have to over expose +2 for V-log on the GH6. In camera metering is correct.

By the way... This is one of the best video on the internet. All facts, no filter, no filler. Props!

The problem with your V-Log footage is that you require + 2 stops of exposure. Use the Wave Form Scope to view your exposure setting. In afternoon light with some overcast run auto iso, with dynamic boost F4 1/100 shutter (50p) 32x ND = 2, 000 iso. Happy days are here again.😎

Thanks for this, and for keeping it real. I see you had two nodes, maybe one of those?

😅 bro don’t rush to dismiss it after just a few clips. There are people who have used it quite nicely.

Subscribed, but keeping mine. Can confirm that the S1H has much cleaner shadows though, but also less detail.

I'm wondering if 'shot noise' is the culprit here. This is different from sensor noise and is caused by the interaction of photons prior to hitting the lens.

Basically the lower the overall illumination the higher the shot noise irrespective of other factors. By using heavy ND (as is obviously going to be necessary at 2000 ISO) we are potentially going to be ramping up the shot noise, and that may be what we are seeing here.

Unfortunately I can't think of much of a workaround if that is indeed the issue.

You're right! I experienced the exact same issue, and outside of DR Boost and the need for CFexpress cards, it's not much better than a GH5. The BGH1 sensor already has 13 stops of DR, and native dual iso. They should have built the GH6 around that sensor.

The Dynamic range boost certainly accommodates more DR over to the Highlights. Your image under that harsh sun light looks like you're exposing to the shadow areas hence why you have too much noise. Dr boost will for sure make footage more grainy as it uses 2000 ISO, cinematographers protect their highlights we should expose like that as well. Let the shadows be shadows. I will download your footage and try doing some grading to analize IRE values.

Well I might say Easy Trigger. I probably agree with you but really that is just one example. I've seen many example with some of the bigger channels where it is quite impressive. Think of it as one tool to use in certain situations that can do some good. To completely put it in the toilet and boo Panasonic Not right. Learn more and you may find down the road it can be a blessing to have it. Word. Nothing it cut and drone or is or is not. :)

I had the same issue when I had the gh5 and mange to nail the right exposure, now the gh6 it's incredible but expose it right to look right. Other cameras are easier to manage that but gh cameras a little challenging.

You SHOULD be overexposing by nearly 2 stops. The difference is visible in clipped highlights (in V-Log). If it does not clip in V-Log, DRB in V-Log will not help you. If you don't want to have to use 2000 iso, then just use a different profile as then the minimum is only 800 iso. I recommend HLG if you still want lots of latitude in post, as VLOG isn't necessary ALL THE TIME. Looking at the one shot, what do you expect to happen when you're pointing right at the sun? That in only 12-13 stops of DR for details to magically be illuminated on your subject? The light source is beating down ONTO, and is BEHIND your subject. Should be using a reflector in that scenario to put light INTO those shadowy areas. I understand "run and gun" but like, camera's in this price bracket are not miracle workers. DRB isn't for EVERY scene tbh. Plus turn on the internal NR damnit. Lol It's better than Resolve's in my opinion.

How does the DR Boost hold up on other profiles besides vlog and HLG where the minimum ISO is 800?

bro no offense but u seriously need a new variable nd filter. the vignetting on ur current one is visible... hard. i know it wont help with ur issue but i noticed it immediately and just wanted to let u know

If you are selling your copy of GH6 I al willing to take it of your hands

It's your ND filter that caused the noise for absolute sure. I shot in low light without ND filter with DR Boost on and the footage was as clean as a whistle. ND filters can wreck your footage you need to buy high quality ones and not the variable ones because they are the worst. As for the camera, the footage is as clean as could be so you are doing something wrong and blaming the camera for it.

Man you using iso 2000 and ND filter what you expected? Nd is aditive glass and even if you have super expensive nd glass (what mos of peoples dont have) you will still have much worst fotage... Its apceptable only in situation when you have not proper lens on light situation but use nd for dr test is nonsense... Try it without nd in low light situation and look like fragments in blacks is missing with dr boost. High iso degrading your fotage soo you want lower possible iso for save that image quality and thats why you have this problem... Your iso is too hight (dr boost used in not correct situation/exposition) and nd filter bring aditive fragments where he coud. Recording black man in overexposed situation with nd filter and dr boost are very unefective conditions soo you shoud learn where and how you shoud use it before review
