I bought one in 1975 for use in the Special Forces Q course. It was the Silva Ranger with the inclination feature. Made in Sweden. I've used this all over the world. Never a problem, accurate, and never let me down. Wouldn't buy one now. They are no longer made in Sweden, but Hanzou China.

An fyi, the Silva compasses sold in the USA for the last 20 years were made by Johnson Outdoors ( who owned the rights to the Silva trade name in N. America), and not by the Silva company in Sweden. The two companies once operated cooperatively, but the two companies split and ended their cooperative arrangement in about 1996 ~1998. In late 2017 Silva Sweden acquired the rights to the Silva trade name for N. America from Johnson Outdoors. Starting Jan 2018, Silva Sweden will be importing and supplying the SILVA compasses sold in Canada and the USA.

The ranger model used in this video will be going away. However, Silva Sweden also makes models called the Ranger model. Actually the US version is called Ranger 2.0. Though I think the Expedition S models maybe more similar to the Ranger 515. So similar models will continue to be available, but they will be compasses designed by Silva Sweden. The fonts used by the two companies are different. Johnson Outdoors used this font [Silva] The font used by Silva Sweden is [SILVA] only it's a little more angular looking font. That is one way to tell which company actually made the compass if it matters to you.

That looks suspiciously like the Suunto MC-2 I have sitting next to my Silva

I have one from my fathers store, which closed back in the 90’s. Nearly mint, never used. But it is the Swedish version as it has the 400 Grad ring instead of the 360 degree one.

Help me out fellows with this mystery.. I own a Silva Ranger 515 and on the bottom left corner of the BASE PLATE IT IS MARKED 1:24000 of all the scales on that base plate not one is 1:24000 ? Thanks..

What working scales are on the base plate? I need 1:24000 and 1:62500 for 7.5 min and 15 min Topo maps.. Correct scale is important to speak the same as the map scale..

Pls reshoot this by laying the compass on the table.... instructional value is lost when i can't see the features you are highlighting....

Did you cover the feature where one may determine the angle of a slope with the Ranger 515?

can someone tell me if it's liquid filled?
I'm going on first long mountain hike (30 day) need minimum compass. All I care about is it should be relatively accurate, and wouldn't somehow get completely messed up. Going daytime.

'Glow in the dark' is NOT tritium. Tritium vials glow constantly without needing to be charged by any outside light source, they are very expensive and rare on compasses, you typically only see them on expensive military compasses (and gun sights).

This compass does not have any tritium, please don't just make things up when you have no idea what you're talking about.. Also 'slope' is not the same thing as elevation..
