The Round-Up (1966)
Modern Trailer Edit by Dan McBride
Part of my trailer project - breathing some new life into older, forgotten or overlooked films.
Mainly to spread awareness of these great films and hopefully inspire more people to seek them out.
Director - Miklós Jancsó
Synopsis - In Hungary, the national movement led by Kossuth has been crushed and the Austrian hegemony re-established, but partisans carry on with violent actions. In order to root out the guerilla, the army rounds up suspects and jails them in an isolated fort. The authorities do not have the identity of the guerilla leaders, who are supposed to be present among the prisoners. However, they know enough about some of the suspects to apply perfidious forms of coercion effectively.
I’ll admit I don’t know a lick about Hungarian history… however I didn’t find this to inhibit my viewing experience. The Round-Up is a universally human story about captors that play psychological games with their prisoners. This was my favorite of Jancsó’s films from the boxset that Kino Lorber released, and I wanted to make sure it got it’s proper day in the sun. The cinematography is breathtaking and the film is a work of art —DM
