READ FOR MORE INFO!

The burial of Bad Dürrenberg is one of the richest Mesolithic graves in Europe!
The 6 month old baby boy she was buried with was found to be a genetic relative. She may have been an aunt or cousin several generations removed.

The analysis of the woman’s skeleton revealed that her uppermost cervical vertebra was malformed and that blood vessels in the lower skull area could have been spatially restricted. This malformation may have made her a special person. Anthropologists suspect that through extreme positions of her head she could have even deliberately induced herself to faint. The restricted blood flow to her brain may have resulted in what is known today as Downbeat-Nystagmus, where the eyes drift upward and then "beat" or jump downward. The movement of her eyes may have made it appear as if she was in a trance or "possessed" by animal spirits.

In many tribes, people with handicaps or malformation were often made shaman. If I remember correctly, it was because they believed they were the incarnation of a spirit.

The headrest looks so cool and gives her that mysterious look.

Her headpiece is exquisite. There is something to be said about the culture holding her in such high regard. This is a most fascinating dig to read about, another place I'd like to visit myself, and I am thankful for the painting Ms. Mae✨

I'm simultaneously very happy for the literature and archeological records we have on the people of early Europe, and also very sad that what we have is certainly only a piece of what has been lost to time and conquest. How incredible it is, to get a look into how my and many other's ancestors were living so long ago.

I’d believe it. Anyone suffering from chronic pain knows. When I try to adjust my hip, I swear I’m between worlds ; I can’t explain

As a wheelchair user and provoker of strong feelings (so many of us are subjected to the whims of strangers, politicians, families and assumptions); this is a fascinating perspective on disability and societal worth. I have a unique perspective on life, the universe, and everything; in no small part, because of my disability and the way I am viewed and treated. It's a blessing and a curse but I'm grateful nonetheless. Disability is diversity even through the ages.

I wish there was a way to learn more about them. It is such a shame that we have only small bits and pieces gathered about our early history.

She actually had a dissabilety / spine maleformation that may also contributed to her death, a part of the spine where the blood vessel pass through was compremised putting pressure on her Carotis Attery. ive just seen her this year in the museum of germanic, bronze and prehistory in Halle (Saxony). She had infected cavaties in her front upper theeth and may died of this or a stroke. ( thats why she may had a "special power") stroking put could be seen a a form of higher communication i guess .

Prehistoric culture is interesting. A time where people were truly connected with nature on a deeper level. All civilizations went through this period and it is one of the most elusive but fascinating sections in human history.
What was religion before religion? Are there God's we will never know about? Legends and stories lost to time? What did they speak of their ancestors? What did they know?

She’s first dug up by the Nazis who first declared her male (and these guys measured bodies to determine ‚race‘ !)
In the late 80s her immense age was discovered by carbon dating.
The boy - a relative but not her son- is said to have been around one year old.
The hog teeth on her deer antler headpiece had no holes in them (meaning they are older than early drilling methods)
Her teeth were more damaged than usual even leading to the speculation that she might have died from an tooth infection.

There is no conclusive evidence that she was a religious figure in her community, however an unusually vastamount of animal bones (mostly wild hog and deer, some Ur (paleo-cow) was found around her graveside in later years.

The German country of Sachsen Anhalt is so little known today, but their ancient and pre history is astonishing!

A young woman with a physical deformation was resourceful enough to use her difference to become the centre of her clan/village. She must have ruled by virtue of her intelligence and strength

A woman of a similar status was found in Czechia. Her face was disfigured, she might have suffered seizures. She was given a shamanic status and there was a little bust of her found in the burial site.
Ancient people did not discriminate against "disabled" people. They held them in high regard. 😊

At least she made use of it rather than her being shunned or declared an outcast because anyone who looked different would face prejudice 🤷🏻‍♀️
