How To Extract Any Words From A Sentence In Excel

In this advanced excel tutorial i'm going to show you how you can extract any words from a sentence in excel. Now matter if its the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 10th or any other words; you can extract it using this excel tutorial.
Now we are about to create a custom formula in this tutorial to extract words from a sentence in excel.
Lets get started.
Step 3: Click "Insert" and then "Module"
Step 5: Close the VBE
Step 6: Write the custom formula and press enter
Done. You've successfully extracted words from a text strings in excel.
Custom Formula:
To Extract 1st word of a text write =ExtractWords(A2,1)
To Extract 2nd word of a text write =ExtractWords(A2,2)
To Extract 3rd word of a text write =ExtractWords(A2,3)
To Extract 4th word of a text write =ExtractWords(A2,4)
To Extract 5th word of a text write =ExtractWords(A2,5)
To Extract 6th word of a text write =ExtractWords(A2,6)
To Extract 7th word of a text write =ExtractWords(A2,7)
To Extract 8th word of a text write =ExtractWords(A2,8)
To Extract 9th word of a text write =ExtractWords(A2,9)
To Extract 10th word of a text write =ExtractWords(A2,10)
Here A2 is the cell where the text strings is placed. and 1...10 is the number of the word order.
In this way you can extract nth word of any text or sentence in excel.

Great Function and well presented, just what I need, with a slight tweek as my data has a / separating the text. It would be useful to know how I can add a value to the Extract function to specify the separator as a variable, so far I have just hard coded it.

I need to search the words given in $A$2: $D$128 or $A$2:$A$128 from one table to a Specific column of table 2 containing sentences, and if the search function is able to locate then I need to extract the sentence from table 2 to table 1 against each cell values in table 1.

In addition to that table 1 contains 128 rows whereas table 2 contains 3K+ sentences.

Please do help to address the above issue.

Hi. I have to extract 15 different words from 5 thousands cells "with different sentences" "in different order". Each cell contains one or two of these 15 words. Therefore your formula doesn't work as each cells are very different. Is there ar formula that can extract the mach word(s)? For example, if the 15 words are, apple, orange, lemon, etc, a formula like =Get_word(cell, "apple", "orange", , , , ) and if matches one word, just leave it like "apple".
