Atlantic 873. Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee/ Blues Mixture (I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water). The morning had been brutal at the flea market with only beat up 70's Classic Rock albums to be had. On my last run-through I hit a box of 3 for a dollar records and found a couple of Stick McGhee 78's. Suddenly all was right with the world. This was the B-Side to Atlantic Records first big hit in 1949. It was also a first indicator to founder Ahmet Ertugen that owning a record company might be tougher than he thought. He was in a record shop in New Orleans when he noticed they had a good supply of this 78. This was a surprise hit and the pressing plants could not keep up with the demand. He knew full well that no distributor had any copies to ship. When he took a good look at the copy in front of him he realized it was a counterfeit and that the New Orleans mob had stepped in to fill the void.
