#AskADAPT: DR. WESTMAN DISCUSSES THE KETO ADAPTATION PHASE

Has your body gone through some unexpected changes during the keto adaptation phase? Dr. Eric Westman answers your questions on some of these side effects.

Questions:

Tiffany 1:19
How do you know when you are keto-adapted?

Judy 2:30
Could the keto diet possibly help someone diagnosed with early kidney failure?

Larry 3:08
Could you speak a little bit about increased body odor and acetone breath?

Shannon 4:27
I noticed that when I went to do my regular cardio class, after 45 minutes I hit a point of no longer being able to do the class that I once was. What gives? Also, I noticed it when I hit mile 3 in running. It was like my muscles became limp noodles!

So should you scale back on the intensity or type of work out until completely adapted.

Eva 5:30
Discuss keto flu. Can I avoid it by doing Dr Ludwig’s diet portions backwards?

Marie 6:28
Hair loss, or thining?

Isabel 7:13
What about regularity problems?

Shelly 8:21
Respiratory issues. Until I started this way of eating I haven't had breathing problems, is it because I'm eating fat?

Jim 8:56
What about itchy skin? Not just dry skin but itchiness with bumps in localized areas.

Since starting keto 8 weeks ago, I've noticed my skin tags are dying and falling off. This is SUPER exciting and encouraging!

when I started keto in 2018 I literally thought I found God, and I was doing so tremendously well until the first closure and then all hell broke loose. I haven't been able to get back onto it and this is the reason I'm revisiting all the old lectures like this one.
I can tell you that when I got into ketosis which took about 2 weeks, I absolutely did stink including my urine... my sweat my skin my hair my breath, everything smelled... and it made me tremendously happy! because it was a definitive sign that I was in ketosis and it was working and there was not a happier person around than me... all the smell went away in about a week and I felt wonderful.

I may have found, by watching your video why my ketones are not in the optimal range for fat lose. 1) net carbs. I was counting net carbs and not total carbs. 2) eating to much veggies even though they are mostly greens. I was trying to consume 6-8 cups a day. 3) Sugar alcohols. I am using to much Erythritol. I like it in my coffee but will cut down on this. I will try and do none. I have lost weight but I think I could increase my loss per week by improving on these things. So while I was keeping carbs at 15-20 net carbs, in my app I see my total carb count has been much higher. Ok, this is anew week. I will work on improving my stats. Thank Dr. Westman.

Started 16:8 VLC diet, didn't weigh myself at all just went for it. First week had weird metallic taste in mouth. After 10 days I found fasting so easy decided to push for 36 hour fast that then turned into 48 hour fast. Odd muscle twitch but overall ok. Still low energy but hoping for fat adaption. No ''keto flu'' but maybe its cause I was using plenty of salt. Its pretty incredible to me how relatively easy it is when you're in ketosis.

Planning is key, buy fresh foods that you know have to be eaten. This is how you survive in a house of people who all keep carbs everywhere.

Ok, I’m not a scientist or clinician, but everything I’ve heard so far is that keto comes from the combination of high fat, minimal carbs and moderate protein. But it sounds like you’re suggesting something very different, with high protein, low carbs and minimal fats.
Am I correct in this understanding? And if so, does this also lead to ketosis? Which would be a better choice?

I am a T1 diabetic. I have been doing keto for 8 weeks. I went through the keto flu, i think and added the boulion. Is this something I need to keep taking daily from now on? I still get the feeling many times when I feel totally exhausted and wiped out. I haven’t been able to do aerobics since starting this WOE. Other people claim they have more energy after starting keto. I am the opposite. I have lost about 13lbs and have dramatically improved my blood sugars. I hope to lose another 15 lbs and then go to maintenance.

I agree about the he body and breath odour. I don't have those, but do have the sweetish scent from urine...I can live with that. BTW, it took me weeks to get into ketosis, however, I think it was following all the bad info out there.

magnesium supplements would be helpful to regulate your bowels and help with blood pressure issues.

My ketones finally hit 1.3 today. I woke up with a headache. My weight dropped a bit but tonight I got super bad intestinal distress to say it nicely. Any advice? Can or should I take immodium? Maybe I cant handle the fat or raw greens? Maybe I just have a tummy bug? Idk!

Never had 'keto flu' but increased salt intake just to make sure frequent urination didn't deplete it. But now my BP's a little high, 134/78, and stubbornly so. I guess I'll have to cut back on the salt. Bummer, I love salt.
