Here in Chilean Patagonia we have our own breed of shepherd dogs called: Magellanic shepherd or also known as barbucho, (wich is a descendant of the Old Welsh Gray sheepdog) was breed with a purely utilitarian criteria, selecting different breeds capable of carrying out herding tasks, resistant to the rigorous climatic conditions of Southern Patagonia, so different British sheepdogs where brought to Chilean Patagonia, initially from the Falkland Islands and later from Great Britain, such as the Old Welsh Grey, the Old England Sheepdog and the Border Collie, have been crossing since the end of the 19th century to create the Malleganic Sheepdog. The characteristics of the Magellanic Shepherd are: medium size, 50 centimeters high, long or semi-long hard hair, drooping or semi-erect ears, square muzzle. An innate instinct for herding sheep, submissive and faithful character, intelligence, capable of receiving instructions only with whistles. Great resistance to snow and cold and Patagonian wind, capable of traveling long distances, more than 30 km a day, they usually eat every three days and hardly drink water when they work. His figure can be seen immortalized in the Monument to the "Ovejero Magallanico" in the City of Punta Arenas.
