I really like how they seemed more shy and unsure of eachother in the after seven years gap because it translated on screen as pain that came with still loving each other after heart break and knowing that their affair was unbalanced and uncertain since Allie was engaged to another man and teetering on what she should do. The complexity of the situation really came across in these scenes in a way that I don't think would have had the same impact if the actors were already comfortable with each other by the time they shot those scenes.
