Protestors gather at Capital frustrated over high PG&E rates

Mounting frustration over high power bills led to PG&E customers gathering in protest at the California State Capitol Tuesday.

My PG&E bill went from under $50 to over $400 since they put in the smart meter. I finally went out to the circuit breaker and shut off almost everything, but my bill just kept going up. They wouldn't talk to me or work with me at all. My power is now off, and I don't want it back on because I can't afford it. I'm hoping to get solar at some point. It's hard, but better than no food.

More than doubled? Try triple. Our PG&E bill is now more than our mortgage. They do not offer assistance that is meaningful. It’s more just to placate the public to say they have something. Thank you for sharing this. I’m glad to know others are fed up, too.

As a “News Organization” why don’t you do the research and ask Newsom about the campaign contributions he has received from PG&E along with his wife who received $250K for her charity. Pay to Play is a way of life for Newsom and his fellow ‘me first’ Democrats!

$.50 per kilowatt hour is criminal people should be put in prison. Here in Michigan we just got a hike. We’re currently paying $.18 per kilowatt hour on peak hours and they wanna raise the rates again to fund their private jets. We need to stop treating gas, water and electric like it’s a commodity and more like an necessity because people are literally dying without them or because they can’t afford them.

I know of 3 homes that have PGE. Two of the homes have 1 person living in them and the other has two. No pools, spas or any other ammenties besides the necessities. None of the homes are larger than 1K SF. Their bills are all $600+ a month. They could shut their breaker off for the entire billing cycle and they would probably still get a bill for $400.

PG&E, all utilities, and services for the public good, like medical foundations, should be non-profits. With a non-profit people still get paid well to work for the service but profits go into the service, not stockholders pockets.

My guess, just like with auto gas prices here in California; they raise the prices until there are numerous complaints, then they slowly lower it down halfway -- that halfway mark is their "stabilization" plan, which is still far higher than the national average. It is greed, and it is unacceptable.

Compare what folks in Minnesota pay for heating in the winter. They have terrible, freezing winters, and yet they pay far less for gas and electricity. A, es you wonder why we Californians pay so much more when we have a much milder climate.
