As someone who's parents check their devices literally three times a week,

RULE NUMBER 1, incognito.
RULE NUMBER 2, do a check up just to make sure you've hid everything.
RULE NUMBER 3, delete messages you think they could interpret wrongly, don't confuse this with unsending them. Deleting will erase them for you but still show for the other contact.
RULE NUMBER 4, never let your guard down. i've made this mistake once and never again!
