What's difference between school & real learning? What we have here is a failure to communicate!

Thumbnail: From the movie "Cool Hand Luke." Cool Hand Luke was punished for trying to escape. Warden said, "What we have is a failure to communicate! Some mens, you just can't reach. He wants it, so he gits it." Luke was forced to dig a hole, and then fill it back in again. The school equivalent of this is to make students memorize meaningless, disconnected stuff like lists of vocabulary words; that student & teacher both know the student's going to forget within a week. In comparison, real learning is something you seek. You want to remember it long term.

Many public school teachers I knew in my day, like me, wanted to engage their students in the learning process as much as possible. Including offering choices in teaching modalities and subject matter. I would never say all public school learning is not Real learning. My students were engaged, excited in learning process as much as I could provide the environment for that. 🙏
