Coronavirus: Rand Paul, Dr. Fauci debate when to reopen schools amid COVID-19 pandemic

Sen. Rand Paul delivered an emotional statement during Tuesday’s Senate hearing on safely returning to work and school amid the COVID-19 pandemic, stating data has shown that “young children rarely spread the virus,” and that some countries who have reopened schools amid the pandemic have not had surges in virus cases.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top infectious disease expert in the U.S. said that he “strongly” agrees with Paul that the country needs to “do whatever we can to get the children back to school.”

Rand Paul went to Baylor University and Duke University School of Medicine. He's a doctor, not just an ordinary senator. Why does the title only refer to Anthony Fauci as a physician?

Perhaps our experts should not focus so much on cases, rather recoveries and deaths.
The highest death rates are amoung the elderly ; those not working. Therefore, there is absolutely no reason to shutdown the economy. Younger people recover and go back to work and keep the economy running..

Rand Paul is the only Senator on this panel who is actually a Medical Doctor, and the only Senator who uses scientific data to come to a conclusion.

Opening schools is like the scene in Jaws when no one wants to be first to go in the ocean. All governors have moved start date no sooner than Aug 17th. Rural schools should be able to have some success, but the virus is too rampant to consider opening schools. Mass gatherings inside. Only takes one student, teacher, staff member to cause an outbreak. Who will sub when a teacher goes down? This is no different than opening up a mega bar, church, etc. See an epic fail in opening schools.

The data from Europe are not directly comparable because schools in Europe have only started to reopen after society flattened the curve through social distancing and masks. The US is still spiking.
