Chinese foreign ministry said Beijing will not change its position that Taiwan is part of China, after pro-independence party candidate President Tsai Ing-wen won re-election. Beijing’s Taiwan Affairs Office also said the country opposes any acts for Taiwan independence.Hours earlier, Tsai Ing-wen said in her victory speech that she would not submit to China’s threats.Meanwhile, to many anti-government protesters in Hong Kong, Tsai’s landslide victory is a boost to their movement.

Congratulations to President Tsai Ing-wen from Australia - another great democracy. I'm Australian and I don't know a great deal about Taiwan - but I do know that, unlike China's Communist Party, Taiwanese leaders have the courage to hold free and fair democratic elections for all their people to participate in. Hopefully China will one day (inevitably?) be a democracy too.
