“Took some creative liberties”. That’s the understatement of the year.

And the inspiration to the real Braveheart king Robert the Bruce.

Describing braveheart as taking historical liberties is a bit mild. It made it look like Scottish people lived in the Stone Age by comparison to England. Scotland was a typical Western European country technologically and it’s armies would have been similarly equipped as any other, not looking like face painted Picts from Roman times. While not perfect outlaw king depicts the period a lot better.

Funny thing is, he never made an oath to England or the King so he never actually committed treason.

A while back my aunts did a whole family tree/genealogy thing on my mom's side. Apparently my grandfather (who if you look at you'd say yep you're scottish) can trace his lineage all the way back to the same period.12 century Scotland. It's always blown my mind.

The victory at Sterling Bridge was actually led by TWO MEN: William Wallace and Andrew de Moray, both men simultaneously held the same title in Scotland. The highest title, co-Guardians of the Kingdom of Scotland and Leaders of its Armies, who together defeated the English forces. The movie combined both leaders into one character, which made the story easier to understand, however it’s important historically to note that the family of De Moray who in the next generation were officially renamed and thus became the first ‘Murray’s’ who became ‘Clan Murray’ which is a very famous Scottish family (like actor, Bill Murray, or tennis player Andy Murrey).

Thirty years after the death of Andrew de Moray, his son, Andrew Murray of Bothwell, also held the same highest title and became ‘the Guardian of Scotland’ in 1332. His descendants went on to become powerful nobles for many centuries afterward. Like most Scottish clans they’re credited with tons of inventions, and the last name is famous around the world. And in a lot of ways the Scotts are more like the more recent version of the ancient Greeks, people in the middle of nowhere inventing a bunch of cool stuff and kicking everyones ass in war. Haha

Useless trivia Wallace County in Texas is named after one of his descendants who helped save a town from Indians according to a film I watched about the Alamo.

He was also legendary for being an absolute brute and brigand. He was not a nice man even for that time.

I truly appreciate the invaluable and fascinating information. However, I would like to make a request and hope you will not be offended. I become highly anxious and on the verge of a panic attack hearing you speak so fast, the constant movement of your head as well as the zooming in and out. None of it is necessary and there is no reason to rush. Your content is captivating, high quality, and always of great interest to many. I hope you consider my feedback as I would love to continue listening to you.

I thought William Wallace was a myth, much like Achilles, where they are only mentioned in a poem? Same thing where, not much is known about them but are this amazing figure…
