I embarked on my second summit of the 50 State Challenge, aiming for Wheeler Peak. My journey started at 1:40 a.m. with a cup of coffee, followed by a quick stop at a 7-Eleven for some road fuel. The drive was a long 9.5 hours, but the peace of driving through Southern California's freeways in the early hours was worth it. As I moved north of Vegas and west of Salt Lake City, the remoteness of Wheeler Peak became apparent.

Driving through the Great Basin, I stopped at various spots to stretch my legs and enjoy the scenery, like the National Wildlife Refuge and Cathedral Gorge State Park. The solitude and beauty of US-93 northbound were incredible, making the drive a pleasure. Reaching the Great Basin Visitor Center, I grabbed a map and headed up the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive, marveling at the views despite the threatening thunderstorms.

Deciding to acclimatize, I did a loop hike at 10,000 feet, exploring glacial lakes and ancient bristlecone pines. The hike was stunning, but the weather forced me to retreat early. I spent the night at the Border Inn on the Utah-Nevada border, ready for an early start the next day.

The next morning, I began the ascent to Wheeler Peak, enjoying the solitude and the breathtaking landscapes. The climb was challenging, especially the final stretch, but reaching the summit was immensely rewarding. The views from the top, including Stella and Teresa Lakes, were spectacular. Despite the fatigue, the experience was unforgettable, marking Wheeler Peak as a highlight in my 50 State Challenge.

That's my local 711 in Newport! Awesome stuff dude.

Hate to say what everyone has already said but you are an absolute beast and you make these VERY strenuous hikes look so easy. Huge inspiration for those of us who want to get out and tackle some hikes on the weekend. Great work Cris!

Great video! I hiked up to Wheeler Peak in 2019. Totally worth the trip. GBNP is highly underrated. I also recommend visiting Lehman Caves.

In 2014 I attempted this hike but my car "dropped the tranny" at the Summit Trailhead parking lot on my way to Wheeler Peak campground. I was towed to Ely, NV. Told I needed a new transmission, I ended up towing the car (2004 Audi Avant) behind a rented U Haul across NV on Hwy 50 home to the Bay area. In 2021, now in SoCal, I made the drive you did and finally bagged the peak. As an aside, the google street view of the Summit TH is from Sept 2014 which is the same month this happened and I think I can see my trans fluid stain on the right edge of the lot. That's where I waited for the tow haha. Thanks for the video, it's a fun memory now, not so much then!

Yes! I loved this video. Really good editing, great mix of shots/talk overs/interactions, and some great humor. Very entertaining to watch while also interesting and informative. Not easy to do when making a video so hats off to you my friend! Look forward to more 👍 cheers

Love your videos! Picked up the “pro tip” on how you deal with the long tail of your chest strap— looping it back through! Nice touch. Here’s a recommendation for you— add the Hyperlite Contour Removable Hip Belt to your Osprey Hikelite. It helps disperse the load and has plenty large enough pockets for cell phones, sunglasses and snacks. Was a game changer for my Hikelite!

Hiking Guy should have his own hiking tv show on PBS or on Discovery Channel. This is amazing, educational content.

Great video! I like the format where you show all of it, the journey, etc and not only the actual hike.

This is gonna be an awesome challenge series - can’t wait to follow each one. Had no idea Great Basin National Park was so scenic, let alone had a glacier! Great adventure.

You are the best! Thanks for all you do for the community. I was a little confused at the start because I thought Mt Charleston was the highest peak in NV but I guess I was wrong. I am looking forward to Wheeler Peak in NM. I attempted it a few years ago and got blown off and only made it to the junction after all the steep access roads. Getting after it again in a month or so.

Wheeler Peak is a great hike, one of my favourite day hikes! The whole park is really nice, and definitely worth the long drive (from anywhere) to enjoy a crowd free national park
