I embarked on my second summit of the 50 State Challenge, aiming for Wheeler Peak. My journey started at 1:40 a.m. with a cup of coffee, followed by a quick stop at a 7-Eleven for some road fuel. The drive was a long 9.5 hours, but the peace of driving through Southern California's freeways in the early hours was worth it. As I moved north of Vegas and west of Salt Lake City, the remoteness of Wheeler Peak became apparent.
Driving through the Great Basin, I stopped at various spots to stretch my legs and enjoy the scenery, like the National Wildlife Refuge and Cathedral Gorge State Park. The solitude and beauty of US-93 northbound were incredible, making the drive a pleasure. Reaching the Great Basin Visitor Center, I grabbed a map and headed up the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive, marveling at the views despite the threatening thunderstorms.
Deciding to acclimatize, I did a loop hike at 10,000 feet, exploring glacial lakes and ancient bristlecone pines. The hike was stunning, but the weather forced me to retreat early. I spent the night at the Border Inn on the Utah-Nevada border, ready for an early start the next day.
The next morning, I began the ascent to Wheeler Peak, enjoying the solitude and the breathtaking landscapes. The climb was challenging, especially the final stretch, but reaching the summit was immensely rewarding. The views from the top, including Stella and Teresa Lakes, were spectacular. Despite the fatigue, the experience was unforgettable, marking Wheeler Peak as a highlight in my 50 State Challenge.
