I am a retired research Engineer. In this video, I think that they're insulting both science and the heroics of the civilians who had the guts to go in there and assist the survivors while Authorities with the New Zealand police and the local emergency responce authority at Saint John's failed to do so. Our research, which was performed in about 40 years ago, concluded that the actual risk of a follow-on eruption (steam explosion) was extremely small. A water-induced steam explosion type of eruption takes a fairly significant amount of time to recharge. In the case of this Volcano, it appears that this time is on the order of 3 years... So- why did they wait 4 days to do what they should have done within a few minutes? ( Heroics - not at all) This newscast makes it sound as if there were heroes involved when the TRUE heroes had already done their job and actually saved lives. (These guys came in long after the fact and with far more protection and knowledge... but were identified as heroes?? Give me a break!) The combination of ignorance cowardice and subsequent arrogance on the part of the police authorities and the director at Saint Johns was astounding! In fact those same authorities did everything possible to slow down rescue attempts cause additional trauma to the survivors and more than likely caused additional deaths! The heroic pilots who were bringing backsurvivors that would have been left for dead by the New Zealand police search and rescue authorities were told to land at the airport rather than the hospital which would have taken far more time caused far more trauma and likely resulted in more deaths! Thankfully, the civilian pilots had the guts to reject those demands and landed at the hospital! I want to be clear that I am in no way being critical of the actual staff of New Zealand search and rescue because they had no choice in the matter. I'm certain that they were Extremely frustrated and insulted by being told to land at the airport rather than go out to the island and recover survivors. They realize that their job involves risk and they should be allowed to determine what risk level they are willing to accept. The failures of ignorance communication and cowardice grew to the point to where only civilians and some of the tourists had the opportunity and the guts to do what need to be done. They were the TRUE HEROES and should be given they're rightful Acknowledgment and respect by the media... which is never happened! The tour group staff should also be considered heroes as they risk their lives and in some cases give up their lives to help their clients! It is the leadership that I call cowards and arrogant fools. I blame the media for protecting these same Despicable creatures. The truth matters, and those who died and suffered at the hands of these irresponsible authorities deserve the truth. The New Zealand authorities [Police, Saint John's, et cetera] are guilty of (1) failing to properly prepare for such an event; (2) failing to be knowledgeable about the cause and consequence of such events; (3) Failing to properly notify the tour companies and most certainly the clients or tourists associated with this event Of the increase potential for erruption [The cycle time of approximately 3 years was well known, and they could easily monitor seismic events (Fourier analysis) to predict when could have a steam-explosion eruption]; (4) failing to understand the potential for follow-on eruptions [4 years]; (5) failing to properly recover surviving survivors and the dead in a reasonable period of time which is to say an hour or two-day; and (6) subsequently rather than answering questions accurately they became extremely arrogant and continue to make extremely misleading if not fall statements regarding the scientific legitimacy of their actions!!! Hence it is apparent that they are guilty of cowardice, incompetence, ignorance, and/or arrogance..which ultimately resulted in additional, severe trauma amongst the survivors and, most likely, additional DEATHS! Why is this newscast celebrating such disturbing and despicable behaviors???

I'm Australian and I'd never go to a volcano. It was highly insane to run a tour to white island, but its highly stupid to actually go on a tour to an active volcano. Common sense needs to become common again!
