Citing reporting from the PBS NewsHour, Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., questioned the chief of Law Enforcement Operations for Customs and Border Protection about whether a 3-year-old could be national security threat. In a House hearing on Thursday, Lieu referenced a story from NewsHour correspondent Amna Nawaz about a girl named Sofi, who came to the U.S. legally in 2018 with her grandmother, but was separated from her family for 47 days before being reunited with them. “Sofi is not a criminal or a threat to the United States as a 3-year-old, correct?” Lieu asked Brian Hastings. “I don’t know the background in this case,” Hastings said. Lieu pushed again, asking: “Do you know any 3-year-olds who are criminals or national security threats to the United States?” The CBP official answered “no.”
