With polls showing this will be a close U.S. presidential election, security forces across the capital are on high alert. Two days ahead of the election, workers were seen putting up additional security measures outside the White House and the official residence of the vice president.

Outside the White House, which already has a fence and barricades, workers were putting up additional fencing to create a wider, enclosed perimeter. Secret Service agents guarded the building.

Tourists took photographs, and said they enjoyed being in Washington, D.C. and experiencing the excitement of the election.

Almost 3 miles (over 4 km) away, workers were installing fencing outside the official residence of the vice president, the U.S. Naval Observatory, where Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris lives.

This election cycle, some campaign speeches have contained violent rhetoric and courts around the country have been inundated with pre-election litigation.
