So excited to see this in my feed!!! Love what you said about this book feeling new and fresh even though it’s from the 90s. So true! And how she makes the everyday mundane seem interesting. Totally agree. About the negative reviews, it’s really interesting that people are disliking so much what we both absolutely loved. I feel like stuff like this can be pretty polarizing because it’s just SO steeped in stream of consciousness and the bizarre that you kind of have to be on board with that stuff before you even start the book haha!

Great job, again! Congratulations on going over 1, 000 subscribers too. I looked around for a place to buy Cipher at a price I could afford, but all of my book buying sources seem to have it priced out of my reach. I only read paper books and am unable to enjoy reading on a computer or phone screen. Maybe someday I"ll come across it at the many used bookstores I buy from. Thanks for the recommendation.

Kathe Koja shared the link for this video on her Facebook page 😀 I'm glad to hear about how much the paperbacks go for because I own two of the original first prints and I've never even thought to look. The Cipher has to be my absolute favorite of her work, and others being Bad Brains, and Kink.

Hi Alex, I loved your review of The Cipher.  I understand that this novel will not appeal to a lot of people due to the writing style but I am with you that the writing style, characters and feel of the books is exactly what I loved about it. The way Kathe Koja writes almost puts you into a drug like state.  I especially found this with her other novel Bad Brains, which I think you will love just as much :-)

I've never heard of this book before today! I actually took a look at a synopsis and sample of an e-copy, and it looks absolutely bizarre. Thank you for this video, will definitely keep this one in mind if I'm in the mood for a bizarre read!

About time this was re-released in paperback, I just can't get into reading a Kindle. The only other Kathe Koja book I've read is 'Skin', about bourgeoning insanity in the body modification scene, and is well recommended.

Hi. I just finished The Cipher recently, it was everything I could've wanted and more, I totally locked into the stream of consciousness writing style along with the blatant but vivid depravity of it all. Could you possibly recommend similar books fusing a psychological or cosmic horror with a grimy body horror like this one? Koja's Bad Brains is on my list next (of course), and maybe there is truly nothing like the atmosphere of this book, but if anything close comes to mind let me know!
Also, I'm new to your channel, your taste and the quality of your content is impeccable. Great work!

This is the first horror book that actually was a hair-raiser. There was an intense scene where I slammed the book shut to catch my breath. That is what I call Scary!!!

Hi Alex, I know this is one of your older videos, but I had heard you mention House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski, I had also heard a couple other booktubers talk about it as well...so I added it to my list of books to buy, which I eventually did get around to buying a copy of it. My question is this: Did you do a review of this book, and if you didn't actually review it, but read it, I'd like to know what you thought about it? I just finished it, and it was the craziest book I've ever read in my entire life, but I loved it!

I read this book in 92 .. I couldn’t put it down .. I was really inspired and wrote something myself for the first time . I highly recommend it .. great book 🔥🎯
